Impact Over the Years

ARA IN Ghana · Our development journey

Working with communities.
Building opportunity.

Working with rural communities to build knowledge, strengthen livelihoods and care for the environment.

ARA IN Ghana’s work brings together environmental protection, agriculture, practical skills and community wellbeing. This overview presents our experience over the years and the purpose behind the programmes we have delivered with communities and partners.

2006 · Best Environmental NGO Award

ARA IN Ghana received the 2006 Best Environmental NGO Award, presented by the Ministry of Science and Technology. This recognition is an important milestone in our environmental work.

Our contribution to rural development

Training, community participation and practical solutions connect the different parts of our work. The sections below bring our main areas of contribution together in one place.

Afforestation & environmental care

Our environmental work has included afforestation initiatives and awareness activities with communities. These efforts support the care of trees and local natural resources and encourage people to take an active role in protecting the places where they live and farm.

Contribution: community involvement in environmental protection, alongside practical learning about the value of trees and forests.

Extension officers & farmer training

ARA has trained agricultural extension officers and organised farmer training programmes. These activities connect agricultural knowledge with the practical needs of rural farmers and help strengthen the people who share advice and learning within farming communities.

Contribution: stronger local agricultural knowledge and opportunities for farmers and extension officers to learn and exchange experience.

Youth in agriculture

We have encouraged young people to engage with agriculture through practical learning and involvement in farming activities. Bringing youth into agricultural work connects skills development with food production and rural livelihood opportunities.

Contribution: exposure to farming, hands-on experience and a clearer connection between agriculture and future work.

Youth development, entrepreneurship & practical skills

Our youth development work has included entrepreneurship and skills development programmes. These activities help young people explore their abilities, develop practical knowledge and consider how their skills can contribute to employment, enterprise and community life.

Contribution: learning opportunities that connect personal development with participation in the local economy.

Women’s empowerment

Women’s empowerment programmes form part of our rural development experience. They create space for women’s learning, livelihood development and participation in community initiatives, recognising the knowledge and responsibilities women already bring to their households and communities.

Contribution: opportunities for women to develop skills, share experience and participate in local development.

Solar cookers & rural energy solutions

ARA has introduced solar equipment, including solar cookers, to rural communities. The purpose is to offer alternatives to wood-based cooking fuels and help reduce pressure on forest trees cut for charcoal.

Contribution: access to practical learning about solar cooking and alternative energy. These activities link renewable energy learning with forest conservation.

Volunteers working alongside communities

Voluntary service connects people and skills with development programmes. Volunteers contribute alongside local teams, with activities shaped by community needs, relevant experience and local guidance. Our development work remains centred on the communities it serves.
