Rural Development Programs
Community Development Initiatives
Promoting sustainable, healthy and socially responsible rural communities through awareness, environmental and welfare initiatives.
Explore ARA IN Ghana’s five connected program areas below. Each section explains its focus and how it contributes to rural development.
Program 01
Environment & Sustainability Programs

Healthy land, water and surroundings support rural livelihoods and community wellbeing. This area connects environmental awareness with practical care for the resources people share.
Focus areas: tree planting, soil and water conservation, environmental education, renewable energy learning, ecological sanitation and cleaner community spaces.
Community participation links awareness to everyday action and encourages responsibility for local environments.
Program 02
Rural Livelihood & Entrepreneurship Programs

Rural development needs opportunities for people to earn, learn and build useful enterprises. This area focuses on practical knowledge, employability and community-based economic activity.
Focus areas: enterprise skills, digital knowledge, apprenticeships, value addition, community savings initiatives and opportunities connected to agriculture and other local livelihoods.
The emphasis is on skills and ideas suited to local resources and markets, with women and young people included in the conversation.
Program 03
Cultural, Sports & Youth Development Programs

Culture, sport and learning create spaces for young people to participate, develop confidence and connect with their community. These activities complement practical skills and education.
Focus areas: cultural exchange, creative activities, community sport, teamwork, leadership, libraries and access to learning opportunities.
Activities should encourage inclusion, respect and a positive role for young people in community life.
Program 04
Agriculture & FPO Development Programs

Agriculture connects food security, household income and the condition of rural land and water. This area brings practical farmer learning together with the development of farmer producer organisations (FPOs).
Focus areas: crop and vegetable production, livestock care, soil improvement, conservation farming, water management, farmer learning and stronger producer groups.
FPO development focuses on cooperation, shared learning, group organisation and links to services and markets. Specific activities are shaped with farmers and relevant partners.
Program 05
Women Empowerment Programs

Women’s participation is central to rural development. This area focuses on opportunities for women to build skills, strengthen livelihoods and take part in decisions affecting their families and communities.
Focus areas: practical and enterprise skills, women’s groups, agricultural livelihoods, access to information and participation in community initiatives.
Project discussions should recognise women’s priorities, responsibilities and existing knowledge. Support can connect economic opportunity with community welfare and shared learning.
Water, sanitation & community welfare
Safe water, everyday hygiene, sanitation and useful shared facilities support all five program areas. Our wider rural development focus includes schools, libraries and other community infrastructure, with attention to participation and long-term care.
How we approach a rural project
Listen to the community
Define a local priority with the people affected, including who will participate and benefit.
Plan practical support
Discuss activities, skills, materials, roles and resources with community members and partners.
Build local ownership
Connect implementation with shared learning, responsibility and care of local facilities and resources.
Voluntary service attached to development programs
Volunteers contribute alongside local teams within these program areas. Roles should respond to community needs and be matched to relevant experience, preparation and local guidance.
